A Relaxed Winter Wedding in France
A Photographers guide to a Relaxed Winter Wedding in France

Why I Love Photographing Winter Weddings in France
When you think of weddings in France you often picture long sunny summer days, vineyards, good wine and warm golden evenings. While these weddings are undeniably beautiful and the dream for many couples planning a South of France wedding, there is something truly special about photographing a winter wedding in France.
In winter it is not the sun creating the warmth, it’s the people. Warmth comes from guests gathering close, long shared meals, and music and laughter filling the space. Everything slows down. Conversations last longer, laughter feels louder, and the whole atmosphere becomes more relaxed and intimate. There is less pressure to follow a packed timeline or escape the afternoon heat. Instead the day unfolds naturally.
This wedding at Château de Béduer was everything I love about photographing winter weddings in France. Holly and Tom created a day that felt completely their own, putting so much attention into the smaller details and focusing on what really mattered – being present with their favourite people.
It’s something I’ve been noticing more and more. Couples are increasingly choosing winter weddings in France not just for how it looks, but for how they feel.

Choosing the Right Venue for a Winter Wedding
When it came to Holly & Tom’s choice in venue there really was no question. They knew exactly where they wanted to celebrate their wedding day. They had a genuine connection to the château, which made the whole day feel even more personal. Nothing was overcomplicated, just a space that meant something to them, and the freedom to celebrate it in their own way.
What to Look for in a Winter-Friendly Venue
Choosing the wedding venue is one of the biggest decisions when planning a winter wedding in France. Visiting potential venues during the winter months is a great way to see how they feel during the colder season. It is also important to consider the local area. Oftentimes, smaller towns in the South of France can have fewer amenities during the winter which can make finding accommodation, travel and local activities a little trickier. Choosing a wedding venue near a larger city or airport makes travel easier for guests and on site accommodation is a huge bonus when local options are limited.
For winter weddings cosy indoor spaces are essential. Look for rooms with fireplaces, lounges and intimate dining areas that can naturally create warmth and atmosphere. Lighting is just as important. You will want the rooms to feel welcoming and intimate. Adding candles and soft lamps enhances the natural winter light beautifully.
Tip: Even if a château looks stunning online make sure it has the spaces to comfortably host your day regardless of weather.

Planning a Relaxed Winter Wedding in France
How to Create a Wedding Day That Feels Natural and Effortless
One of the biggest things i’ve noticed whilst photographing winter weddings in France is how much a relaxed and flexible approach affects the feel of the day.
Holly and Tom were the perfect example. From our first conversation they told me they wanted a completely relaxed, festival feel to the weekend. And they certainly made that happen. They focused on what really mattered to them. Their families and friends, their love of music and their children and plenty of glitter. The whole day felt warm, welcoming and full of energy. Nothing was forced and the timeline was completely relaxed. It was genuinely difficult to leave at the end of the night.
Their personalities shone in unexpected ways. They did not plan any formal décor for the outdoor reception space. Instead they sent friends into local towns with some cash to find unusual items. My favourite was a random ice skate and a pair of skis. Such an unusual but incredibly wonderful touch that added such a fun and unique twist and a fantastic way to get their guests involved in the day.
Weddings like this feel the most meaningful not because of how they look but because of how they feel to be part of.
If you are planning a winter wedding in France it is worth holding onto this. The more space you give the day to breathe the more real memorable moments will happen.

The Beauty of Winter Light for Wedding Portraits in France
The winter light in France is one of the most underrated advantages of getting married during the colder months. Instead of harsh midday sun the light stays soft and gentle throughout the day. This makes it much easier to create natural, relaxed portraits without strict timing pressures. Rather than planning everything around a short golden hour window we can step away whenever it feels right. This keeps your wedding day feeling flexible and natural.
With Holly and Tom, this approach worked perfectly. We took a short walk away during their drinks reception for a few quiet moments together. There was no real plan but I simply gave them space to be themselves. The light was soft, and slightly muted with a touch of drizzle but it just became part of their day. Their photos felt unforced and reflected their fun and easy going personalities. And of course there was always time to show off Holly’s incredible wedding shoes!

Booking a Wedding Photographer for your Winter Wedding
A Natural Documentary Approach to Winter Weddings
When searching for a winter wedding photographer in France the most important thing is to find someone that you not only get along with and trust but also whose approach matches how you want your day to feel. Winter weddings naturally lend themselves to a slower, more relaxed pace. The light is softer, the atmosphere more intimate, and amazing moments often happen quietly. Having a photographer who can work with those more intimate moments without forcing anything makes all the difference.
A documentary approach works beautifully in winter. Rather than focusing on posed photos that can take a long time to organise, it allows the day to unfold authentically capturing real moments as they happen. Experience at other winter weddings is also important. A photographer familiar with winter weddings will know how to work creatively with light, shorter days and darker indoor spaces while keeping everything feeling natural.

FINAL THOUGHTS ON PLANNING A RELAXED WINTER WEDDING IN FRANCE
Winter weddings in France have a way of bringing everything back to what really matters. Without the pressure of long timelines or perfect weather, the focus naturally shifts to people, atmosphere, and the experience of the day itself.
Holly and Tom’s wedding at Château de Béduer was a perfect example of that. Simple, thoughtful, and full of genuine moments. Nothing was overcomplicated, and because of that, everything felt meaningful.
If you’re planning a winter wedding in France, whether that’s in the Lot, the Dordogne, or somewhere else entirely, it’s worth leaning into that slower, more relaxed approach. The less you try to control every part of the day, the more space there is for those real moments to happen. If that sounds like the kind of wedding you’re drawn to I’d love to hear what you’re planning.

EMMA! THESE PHOTOS ARE IN-SANE.”
“You’re so amazing and we’ve been staring at them ever since you sent them… thank you so much for making our wedding day run smoothly, keeping me calm and capturing the best moments!”
