How to travel France with a Wedding Dress or Suit

A guide to making sure your wedding dress or suit arrives in France one piece

With Real Couple Examples

Planning your destination wedding in France comes with many exciting decisions from your wedding venue to trying on and choosing your wedding dress and suit.

With weddings, particularly in France, you are often staying in the middle of nowhere so any last minute changes or issues with your outfits would cause massive stress that you do not need on your wedding day.

As someone who flies often with heavy and slightly awkward equipment, I know how stressful travelling can be. Luggage limits can feel tight, especially with airlines like Ryanair and easyJet, where every bit of space really matters.

So the question of how my couples decide to travel to France with a wedding dress or suit has often crossed my mind. so I decided to ask them in the hope pf helping future couples planning their destination wedding.

Below you will find real examples from my couples of how they organised and planned for their day and some top tips that have helped them make the whole process stress free and simple.

What is important to remember is that there is no correct way to do it and that is actually part of the beauty of planning a destination wedding. Every couple finds their own approach depending on their travel plans, outfit, and budget.

Lizzie & brad – Manchester to Carcassonne

Bringing It by Car with Family or Friends

Lizzie and Brad had the most gorgeous autumn wedding at Château Canet near Carcassonne in October 2025. When we spoke a few weeks before their big day, I asked about their plans for getting to France. They told me they were flying directly from Manchester, while their parents were turning the journey into a bit of an adventure, driving down over the course of a week with Lizzie’s beautiful wedding dress and a car full of decorations and details for the day.

For both UK and European couples getting married in France, this is quickly becoming a favourite option. If you already have guests travelling by car, it can be one of the easiest and most relaxed ways to bring everything you need without the usual travel worries.

No stressing about airline luggage limits, no worrying about overhead locker space and no wondering about what state your outfit will arrive. Dresses and suits can travel hanging up, which means they are far more likely to arrive looking just as perfect as when they left. And perhaps best of all, those important items are in the hands of people you trust, making the whole process feel a lot more enjoyable.

Elle & Sean – Leicestershire to Gers

Flying with your wedding dress as hand luggage

Flying with your wedding dress or outfit can feel a little daunting, but it is often much simpler than you might think. Elle and Sean flew with Ryanair from London to Toulouse for their May 2026 wedding at Château de Puissentut, bringing both of their outfits as hand luggage.

Elle explained that she spoke with her seamstress in advance, who carefully prepared and packaged her dress in a box designed to be carried on board as hand luggage. This is a great option for couples who want peace of mind and prefer to keep their outfits with them rather than placing them in the hold.

If you are planning to do the same, it is definitely worth asking your seamstress or bridal shop if they offer a packing service or can recommend the best way to prepare your outfit for travel. Many have good techniques or tips to help you fold and protect your outfit so they arrive in beautiful condition.

It is also important to check the baggage allowance for your airline before you travel, as cabin size limits can vary. Making sure your box fits within those dimensions will help everything go smoothly on the day and let you focus on enjoying the journey to your wedding. Below I explore the policy for the main airlines that travel into France.

Ben & Esther – Prague to Paris

Buying or Preparing the Outfit in France

Ben and Esther celebrated their wedding at the beautiful Hôtel de Ville de Chatou in Paris. It was such a special experience to capture their day in the place where Ben grew up. Now living in Prague, Ben found that bringing a suit all the way to Paris on the wedding day itself was not the easiest option. Instead, he decided the simplest solution would be to buy his suit during one of his trips back to Paris before the wedding.

This approach will not work for everyone, especially if you are choosing a wedding dress or suit that needs several fittings and alterations, which can require multiple visits. However, for couples who are open to travelling to France in advance, it can become part of the wedding journey itself rather than just a logistical task.

Planning a pre wedding trip to try on and select outfits can turn into a really memorable experience. It is a chance to explore, enjoy time together, and you will get to meet local wedding suppliers along the way. It also removes the stress of transporting your outfits over long distances, making this part of planning your wedding feel relaxed and enjoyable.

Ultimately, it is another lovely option to consider when planning a destination wedding in France, especially if you want to combine preparation with a bit of adventure.

Airline Comparisons

Taking a look at a few of the most popular airlines for destination couples travelling to France, Ryanair, Easyjet and AirFrance I have compared the policies for couples who wish to travel to France with their wedding dress or suit by plane.

Ryanair

Ryanair’s policy for customers flying with wedding dresses or suits is quite simple. if the dress can fit in the allowance given for hand luggage then it can be stored in the overhead locker.

Alternatively couples are able to purchase a separate ‘item seat’ at a normal seat fee for their dresses which would allow that item to be placed on a seat on the plane. There is no additional baggage allowance for these ‘item seats. There is no designated place to hang any garment bags on the plane so all

EasyJet

EasyJet’s wedding outfit policy for couples travelling to France is slightly more relaxed but you still will need to ensure the correct baggage size is purchased with your ticket.

Couples are able to bring on board wedding garment bags that do not need to conform to the normal baggage allowance dimensions but do need to be folded and stored in the overhead locker. Alternatively the couple can purchase a large cabin bag which is included in their easyJet Plus and Smart+ fares.

Air France

Officially Air France do not have a specific policy on travelling with a wedding dress or suit. However, it seems in practice that there may be more capacity for hanging a dress within a closet (should there be space).

It has been recommended by other couples to arrive early to the check-in desk to ask whether this is a possibility. You could also call the airline in advance. You could then enquire about any other options. They may be particularly accommodating if you are travelling on a long-haul flight.

Final Tips and Advice

So what would I recommend to make your travel to France with your wedding dress or suit that much easier.

Never assume your outfit will be ‘fine’

Much like you and your guests your wedding outfit needs its own travel plan. Whether you are driving or flying to France make sure you avoid packing your dress or suit too tightly or underneath heavy luggage for too long at a time. If you are buying your dress or suit in France you should prepare and leave time for alterations or unexpected delays. Treat you dress or suit as your most important item, because in all likelihood, it is.

Build in time for steaming, alterations and emergencies

Almost every outfit creases in transit, no matter how carefully it’s packed. Make sure you plan time at least the day before the wedding for steaming, pressing, or last-minute issues. I always recommend that my couples steam their outfits the evening before the wedding. Steam can often impact or hair and makeup if done on the day. France moves at a slower pace in many regions, especially outside major cities. Having buffer time matters should you need assistance from an external source.

Always keep the important things with you

Whether you are travelling by plane, car or train to France, it is so important to keep the most valuable things with you. This includes your rings, jewellery, veils and sentimental items as well as your dress or suit. Lost luggage is stressful at the best of times. lost wedding details would mean stress on a whole other level.

The experience matters too

Some couples will carefully transport heirloom outfits across borders whilst others will turn finding a dress or suit in France into part of the adventure itself. There’s no single right way to do it (as my couples above have proven). What matters most is choosing the approach that gives you the least stress and the most excitement. The calmer you feel arriving in France, the more present you’ll be for the moments that actually matter.

Tell me all all about your wedding travel plans

I love to hear all about wedding plans including the smaller and seemingly insignificant details. It all adds up to create your wedding day story that often goes beyond the day itself.
